Letter from Melissa Heisey
Thank you for taking the time to visit our site and learn more about our organization and our amazing dogs. I created Angel’s Retreat after spending many years volunteering in shelters and seeing many dogs never make it out. The idea behind Angel’s Retreat is to get dogs out of shelters and into a home environment while still being able to provide a safe and secure space that has the ability to house a large amount of dogs. I like to think of us as a hybrid model between a shelter and a foster home. We are truly here day and night for our animals.
Angel who I adopted in 2004 is the inspiration for Angel’s Retreat. I loved dogs, but had no idea what I was doing when I went to my local SPCA to pick out a pup. Angel was a 1yr old mixed breed who ended up teaching me the true purpose of life. We bonded instantly, but after a few weeks her true personality came through and it was obvious that she was suffering from some serious fear aggression. It was suggested that I consider euthanizing her, but I just couldn’t think of it. From that point, I put everything I had into finding every resource possible to help. Angel led me into a whole new world. She was my best friend for 15 years and there will never be another like her.
Angel will always be in our hearts. We hope that we can help many “Angels” find their perfect humans and many humans find that amazing love that only a dog can give.
